I receive questions and comments on my posts and many times in emails. I am actually surprised how often “Contact” on Menu Bar is being used. It receives third most popular clicks.
I try to respond to almost all of these questions and comments as honestly and as timely as possible. I also know that I may not be able to meet some the expected answers. If that’s the case, then it’s because of my misinterpretation or may be I did not communicate properly. The questions I receive can be classified into three distinct groups, viz., (1) questions related to my time management; (2) questions on my stock holding and my portfolio management; and (3) why am I blogging?
In today’s post, I will discuss about questions related to time management. There are subtle differences but in the end they all are related to how I manage my time.
How do you find time to write so often on your Blog? Don’t you have a full time job or family to take care of? Particularly your posts have large supporting data which would require lot of reading, and then writing about it.
Yes. I do have a family. But that’s not the point.
First, when I was pursuing my doctoral education, my advisor was a task master. Students in his group worked 16 to 18 hours per day. We all students remained much focused to the task. I was no exception. Suffice to say I did not have a choice but had to work hard and remain focused. Habits developed during those times have remained with me.
- I find it hard to remain idle and not doing anything.
- I do not watch sitcoms or every other movie.
- I do not look at my portfolio values from day-to-day.
- I do not attempt to follow what’s happening in day-to-day markets, sky is falling scenarios, who said what, etc?
- I do not read about get rich formulas.
- I absolutely stay away from tips and financial advice.
- Political debates, cricket chatter, movie gossips are waste of time for me.
- Yes, but I love an honest debate, critics, or analytical discussion on investing topics.
Second, my Blog is all about how I manage my portfolio. So I do not have to do any special research or allocate any additional time. All the topics I discuss here I would do it any way. The only extra thing I do is writing it down and managing the logistics of this blog. However, I do spend anywhere between 2 to 4 hours daily reading about investing, finance, and economy.
How do you manage time to think of any given topic?
I do not make extra effort to think for any given topic. My objective is to manage my portfolio. Any topic or question that is relevant to it, is a topic for me. Even the topic which is not relevant may sometime become my blog topic.
Is this Blog your only full time job?
No, blogging is not my full time job. I have a full time engineering job which is completely in a different domain. I make an extra effort that I do not work more than eight hours on my full time job. However, I still make sure I get the work done. If I work more than eight hour on any given day, I make sure I balance it some other way. It is not that I do not like my employer. I tell my boss, I get my stuff done at right time, in right way, and I do not bother you with every little thing. And my boss is more than happy and does not bother whether I get it done in six hours, eight hours, or 10 hours. He has given me quite a bit of breathing space. And that what motivates me to continue my current job.
Blogging about investing is very refreshing because it is a different subject than my primary profession. It keeps me away from boredom. It gives me an opportunity to do something different than regular engineering analysis and project management. In addition, I think this is one of those activities that I can do independently. So I have freedom to do what I want, when I want, and how I want. Nobody is there to boss me around. Isn’t that what we all want!
Are you working in financial services industry? Because then only you can find time to write so often and with data analysis.
No, I do not work in financial services industry. In addition to what I mentioned above, it also looks like blogging is slowly becoming a habit (?). However, the way I am getting sucked into world of investing and writing, who know, may be some day I will be in financial services industry.
I am assuming this is not your full time job. How can you concentrate for such a long time because there is lot of new material?
I do not know how I concentrate for such long time. I never looked at it that way. It is likely that my focus is on my investment portfolio and hence, it comes automatically. May be I am little selfish to make sure my portfolio is doing good.
Do you live in small town, because then only you can find so much time to write
This was one of the off beat questions. I do not know how this is relevant. Anyways, I live in a one of the bigger towns.
Summary is, I do not know what else to do! So I write on this blog.
